Order in the court! Order in the court!
I’l have a hummus on rye, Your Honor… You know we had to go there.
We are all over the place this week, but the one place that’s common to our topics is the courtroom. We’re discussing the Supreme Court’s recent decision to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act and some of the language brought up in both the pending litigation against Paula Dean and George Zimmerman.

A Quick Word on ‘The Innocence of Muslims’

Tags: , , ,

This week, we’re offering a shortened version of Hey! That’s My Hummus! as we discuss the various theories behind the incendiary film “The Innocence of Muslims.”  In addition to discussing the details of the events surrounding the film, we also discuss how our respective identities, Jewish and Muslim, are playing into the violence that’s occurring globally.

Best of Hey! That’s My Hummus! – Vol. 2

We’ve hit the 50 show mark! Woo hoo!

And since we’ve made it to that point, we’re taking a quick break this week — no new show. However, we’re re-packaging an old show. Well, two, actually.  We’ve taken segments from two of our earlier shows (from all the way back in 2011) and repackaged them. Why? Because it’s a great way to hear us talk about topics which fascinated us back then (and still do now.)

Our first segment is from April 2011 — we talked about “Whitewashing Hollywood,” which is what happens when a white actor plays the part of an ethnic character.  It’s one of the best kinds of segments — which are the ones where Faiqa and Shiny vehemently disagree.

And then we move to the end of last summer — when we had a story about a woman who was in the middle of a controversy when she was denied access to an amusement park ride because she was wearing a hijab.  We talked about our own outward religious/cultural identities — as well as our own theme park experiences.

Even if you’ve heard these before — listen again! Nostalgia is cool. :)

And after you’ve finished with this episode? Listen to our last episode featuring Rachel Reynolds again. It’s one of the best we’ve done.

Hey! You can support us financially now — at no extra cost to you!  It’s simple, really:  If you shop through Amazon.com by clicking on the widget to the right or the banner below:

{LISTEN} Rutgers Student Sentenced & Ultra Orthodox Rally at CitiField

Tags: , , , , ,

Dharun Ravi, a Rutgers student found guilty of bias intimidation and invasion of privacy was sentenced to thirty days in jail and community service this past week. We also discuss an interesting rally at Citi Field where Haredi Jews, an ultra orthodox group, met to discuss the influence of the Internet in their lives.

This week’s show also starts off quite auspiciously when Faiqa forgets to introduce Mike, but makes a brilliant save in the second half.

This Week’s Tragic School Shooting… {{LISTEN}}

Tags: , , ,

On this episode, we’ll be talking about this week’s tragic shooting at a high school in Ohio which left 3 students dead, some more with injuries, and a community severely affected trying to figure out what went wrong. What were the factors which led up to this act of violence? Was it the shooter’s access to a gun? Was it his upbringing?

It’s a somber topic, and there are certainly many questions left unanswered.  Please let us know what you think — by posting to our Facebook Wall or by tweeting us.

{{LISTEN}} Clemency for Troy Davis? And Is Jew or Not A Jew Okay or Not Okay?

Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

You ever wonder whether someone is a Jew or not a Jew?  There’s an app for that.  Or was in France for a while, anyway.

In this episode of HTMH:

” ‘Jew or Not Jew’ app riles anti-racism group”

PARIS – A French anti-racism group has threatened to sue Apple over an iPhone application called “A Jew or Not a Jew?” that allows users to consult a database of celebrities and public figures to determine whether they are Jewish or not.

SOS Racisme said the application, sold for 0.79 euro cents ($1.07) on the Apple Store France, violates France’s strict laws banning the compiling of people’s personal details without their consent.

(From CBS NewsWorld, September 14, 2011)

And on a more local (and slightly more morbid) note, we discuss the movement for clemency regarding Troy Davis, a man convicted of murdering a Savannah police officer in 1989 and sentenced to the death penalty.

(UPDATE: As of our recording, the clemency hearing was scheduled, but this morning’s news’ reports indicate that clemency was denied to Mr. Davis by the state of Georgia and that the execution is scheduled for tomorrow.)
